The Top of Enjoyment in Western AustraliaThe regions in Western Australia range from a gentle Mediterranean-like coast to savannah, grassland and semi-arid desert. To the north, it's tropical, while 80% of the inland area is desert. Your top-ten expedition will start at the Perth hotels and proceed along the coast. Consider accessing the local Expedia site to find affordable flights for destinations within the continent-country...
1. Kings Park and Botanic Garden, Fraser Avenue, Perth This park on Mount Eliza has splendid views of the city. The ghost gum trees planted along Fraser Avenue in 1937 have grown to enormous heights; each tree has a commemorative plaque.
2. Perth Mint, Perth A remnant of the gold rushes of the 19th century, the Perth Mint, though no longer producing currency, remains a buyer, seller and refiner of gold. You may actually see a spectacular 'gold pour' on one of the guided tours.
3. Swan Valley, inland from Perth Winery and brewery tours run year round from many Perth hotels. Besides wine and beer, though, you also can sample cheese, chocolate, honey and rum. Roadside stands sell melons, grapes and citrus fruits.
4. Fremantle Markets Fremantle Harbour at the mouth of the Swan River is the port for Perth. The Markets, open only on weekends, not only have fresh produce and prepared foods, but also sell Aboriginal art.
5. Fremantle Prison Fremantle Gaol, built in the 1850s, was only closed in 1991 as a prison. It re-opened as a historic site with fifteen acres of cottages, gatehouses and cells. Some tours will show you the flooded tunnels under the prison.
6. Busselton Jetty, Queen Street, Busselton This town southwest of Perth is full of tourist attractions, but be sure to see the enormous jetty stretching into Geographe Bay. It's 2 km long and, at the far end, you'll find the Underwater Observatory with three levels of underwater viewing.
7. The Pinnacles, south of Cervantes On three miles of road in the Nambung National Park about 200 km north of Perth and a bit inland, you'll find this astonishing forest of huge needle-like stone pillars estimated to be between 80,000 and 150,000 years old. Best time to visit is just after sunrise.
8. The Abrolhos Islands, near Geraldton The nearest of this collection of 122 gorgeous islands north of Perth is just 50 km off the coast. Take a tour boat out among the islands to do whatever you'd like to try: surfing, fishing, picnicking, snorkeling or scuba diving some shipwrecks.
9. Ningaloo Reef, off the northwest tip of Australia Travel 1200 km north from Perth to the small village of Coral Bay, head out to sea and you'll find one of the largest coral reefs in the world. It's about 260 km long and you'll see manta rays, sea turtles, sea cows, humpback whales and whale sharks up close.
10. Willie Creek Pearl Farm, Broome Go another 1000 km further away from Perth and you'll be in Broome on the northern reaches of Western Australia. Take the company bus out of town for a tour of this pearl farm. Pearls are also for sale there.
