The word Sukhothai means "Dawn of Happiness". Today the place is in ruins, but many stupas, statues, pylons are still in very good condition. Sukhothai was the capital of the Thai Empire for over 140 years, but it was founded in 1238, therefore it is an important archaeological site in the country.

If you want to visit Thailand's 5 or 10 most interesting places, then you have to see at least Sukhothai or Ayuttahya.
