 Porto Alegre is in the south of Brazil and has 3,5 million inhabitants. Even so, it is only the 10th most populous city in the country. However, by size it is the 4th. Due to its closeness to Argentina and Uruguay, also because it is an industrial center and is located on important infrastructural arteries, it is among the main economic points in Brazil. The leather industry, machinery production are among the most important branches of Porto Alegre's second sector.
The demographics of the city is different to those so Săo Paulo, Rio de
Janeiro and other major cities primarily by the fact that it is not as
mixed racially or ethnically (we know that Brazil is an interestingly
mixed country where many races and ethnicities live in peace together). 80
% of the population of this city is white. Many of them are descendants of
Portuguese colonists who have arrived from the Azores Islands and mainland
Portugal in the 1700s and 1800s. |
