![]() The city is in Transdanubia (Dunántúl in Hungarian), southwest of the capital. Pécs has a sub Mediterranean climate, therefore warmer than the most of Hungary. About 160.000 people live here and about a quarter of a million in its metropolitan area. Abundant in culture and history, this city attracts many foreigners with its cultural events, museums, old churches, even Muslim architecture can be recognized (this due to the one and a half century of Ottoman Turkish occupation). Theater life is also intense, so is music. Pécs is one of Hungary's most musical cities (concerts, festivals are often held here). Cafés and bars are numerous and have a friendly atmosphere. In the city of Pécs you can see a number of churches, also mosques, museums (very important is the Tivadar Csontváry museum), art galleries, there are remains of fortified walls (once the city was surrounded by walls), various ancient archaeological sites. If you have visited Pécs, then make sure to check out the nearby attractions as well: the Villány wine region own, which sits in the mountains with the same name where, another attractive town , Siklós is also placed (there is a castle worth visiting). |
