 Nicknames the "Land of 10.000 Lakes", the state of Minnesota is part of the so-called Midwest. Even though when you look on the map you will find it in the central north. You might think 10.000 lakes is exaggerated, but actually there are 11.842 lakes that are at least 10 acres (approx. 40.500 sq m) large. The area of this state is 225.181 sq km (86,943 sq mi) large and the population is mostly concentrated in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. 5,22 million live in Minnesota and this way the state has a very low density. The biggest ethnic communities except the Anglo-Saxons are the Scandinavians. Swedes, Norwegians, Danes and Finns especially have arrived to this part of America beginning with the 19th century when the areas of Minnesota were still mostly uninhabited lands. |
