Mérida (Mexico) Travel Directory

The word Mérida was given to lots of cities in the former colonial states of Spain. There are cities called Mérida in Spain, Venezuela, Mexico, even in the Philippines.

The Mérida we're talking about can be found on the Yucatán Peninsula's northern part, close to where the waves from the Gulf of Mexico wash the shores. The ocean is about 25 km away from the city and the beautiful Chichén Itzá and Uxmal archaeological sites are also easy to reach by road. These attractions are more inland, deeper in the rainforests, but organized tours, buses will take you there.

If you want to visit the city of Mérida and its surroundings, then you can arrive by plane, there are good airport connections with the rest of Mexico's big cities.

The main attractions are the older buildings, the churches especially, but also the Maya ruins located a bit further outside of the city.
