Machu Picchu (Peru) Travel Directory

Machu Picchu (Peru) Travel Directory

Its name means "Old Peak" and it is 2.430 m above sea level on a high mountain top which has been flattened down by the Incas.

The old city overlooks the deep green Urubamba Valley where the Vilcanota River flows.

Hundreds of thousands of tourists arrive to Machu Picchu every year to see its splendour. Though, the weather is rarely clear. It is usually covered in myst and there are huge crowds of curious tourists.

Interestingly this city has remained intact, it lay hidden for perhaps 500 or 600 years. The Spanish conquistadores never noticed it, despite the fact that they have raided other cities nearby and criss-crossed the valleys below.

It is most common to take a trip down to Aguas Calientes (also called Machu Picchu Pueblo), located in the Urubamba Valley below and travel with bus or on foot all the way up to the site. Some travelers like to hike all the way up to Machu Picchu by applying for a 4 day trek along the famous Inca Trail. A difficult hike, but one can reach up to the site long before other travelers who take the bus from Aguas Calientes. Hikers can get there early in the morning and take photos of the almost empty citadel.
