![]() It is also called the "Hungarian Sea" and it is Central Europe's largest inland body of freshwater. The lake is has max. a length of about 78 km and a max. width of about 15 km. The lake can be visited in the May - September period, but you should travel in June - August to avoid possible showers and enjoy the warmth and the sunshine. Interestingly this lake is not very deep, on average 3,2 m only, but the maximum is 12,2 m. Lake Balaton is surrounded with a large number of towns, villages, resorts, hotels and other places, so there are plenty of attractions to visit and many places to stay at. The northern coast differs a lot from the southern one. The Bakony Hills can be found on the northern side, where cultural events and fortresses, castles are abundant. The north is hilly, small mountains and rocky cliffs are scattered and the region is renowned for its fine wines. The south is less hilly, there are less forests, but many discos in places like Siófok, where youngsters gather. The Balaton and Bakony region is a "must see" for anyone who is planning to visit Hungary. |
