 Köln is the original name in German, but English-speakers have adopted the French name of the city: Cologne. It is the word "eau de Cologne", meaning perfume actually was named after this city. But that's not what Köln is most famous about! Let's take a look... It is located in the western part of Germany and is a major industrial, financial and travel center as well. The Rhine-Ruhr region was a major European industrial region for over 200 years. It has a tradition in coal mining and heavy machinery building, but not only. The city has about 1 million inhabitants and about 200.000 is non-German, mostly Turkish.
Iconic is the gothic Köln dome (or cathedral), the ancient church,
construction of which had already started in 1248, but has not ended until
1880. The building is gigantic, its 2 towers have a height of over 157 m! |
