Chetumal (Mexico) Travel Directory |

![]() It is on the so-called Mayan Coast (Costa Maya in Spanish), on the southeastern Yucatán, very close to the border with Belize. Chetumal used to be the capital of a Mayan state with the same name, in the past it was more often called Chactemal. The city has over 130.000 inhabitants, but has its own airport. There is a zoo, a museum dedicated to Maya culture. If you travel to Chetumal, you will find yourself in a quieter place than Cancún or Playa del Carmen, which are quite far away up north. Less noisy travelers and less youngsters come to this small city, but you will probably meet people travelling to and returning from Belize. |
