The east and west still bears the scars of World War 2 and communism. The typical concrete high-rise buildings are still characteristic of the eastern part, while in the west of Berlin there are more modern buildings and life is more colourful, more intense. During the last decades, since East and West Berlin's unification, the locals have worked constantly on eliminating the stark contrast.

In the past 10-15 years or so, Berlin has climbed to become one of Europe's most important cultural, fashion and business centers. Air travel has risen, cultural institutions have multiplied.

Today Berlin is a mix of the communist era, the pre World War 2 era and the struggle to reemerge.
