![]() This is a city in the southeastern part of Cuba. Its past goes back to 1511, being founded by Cuba's conquistador, Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar. It is believed that Cristopher Columbus landed in Cuba right where Baracoa is located. The name of the city is of indigenous Arauaca origin and it means "the presence of the sea", might refer to the closeness of the Caribbean Sea. About 82.000 live in Baracoa. The place is beautiful with forests and bays (the Baracoa Bay is the most important one), hills, mountain (the wide, semmingly flat-topped El Yunque can be seen in the distance)... So it is a marvelous place. If you have the time to wonder in Cuba, then you will have to visit Baracoa! There is a small redion airport 4 km away, called the Gustavo Rizo Airport. It is a regional airport, connects with Caribbean and Cuban domestic destinations. |
