Bangkok's original name used to be Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, which literally means "City of Angels". Considered one of Asia's most cosmopolitan cities, Bangkok was established as the new Thai capital by the first monarch of the Chakri dynasty in 1782. Today the mega city is the spiritual, political, cultural, commercial, educational, technological and political centre of Thailand. Bangkok is a port city and has many skyscrapers, but old temples as well. Thai food is famous, hotels are quite many and affordable rates can be found easily even by the low-end tourist.
