 The Portuguese name for them is Açores. This archipelago is 1.500 km from Lisbon and is a popular Portuguese travel destination. The islands are autonomous, there is a local government and certain regulations/rules are applied locally only. Some of the islands actually lie on the North American plate and are only 1.925 km from the Canadian St. Johns from the Newfoundland and Labrador Province.
